Find your Perfect Diamond

How to Pick the Best Diamond for Your Budget
The best affordable diamond puts your money where you can see it: an excellent cut first, then near-colourless colour and eye-clean clarity, in the shape and size that suit your style. Follow these seven steps — or let a Marlow designer do the narrowing for you.
Step 1: Set your budget, including the setting
Decide your total spend first, then split it between the stone and the setting. For engagement rings, many shoppers put roughly 60% toward the centre stone.
Step 2: Choose lab-grown or natural
Lab-grown diamonds give you the most size and sparkle per dollar — typically 60–80% less than a comparable natural stone.
Natural diamonds, including Canadian-origin stones, are the pick if rarity or heirloom value matters most.
Both are real diamonds, graded on the same scale.
Step 3: Pick a shape that fits your style
Shape is the most personal choice. Not sure? Start with the shape you keep saving on Pinterest or Instagram.
Step 4: Put cut first
Cut decides how much a diamond sparkles — more than any other C. For round diamonds, look for an Excellent (GIA) or Ideal / Excellent (IGI) cut grade. Fancy shapes don't get an official cut grade, so look closely at proportions, photos, and video — or ask a designer to compare them for you.
Step 5: Find the colour and clarity sweet spot
You may not require D colour or flawless clarity. G–H colour and VS2–SI2 clarity can similar as top grades to the naked eye, for a fraction of the price. Setting in yellow or rose gold? You can often go down to I–J colour, because warm metal hides a hint of warmth in the stone.
Step 6: Buy just under the "magic" carat weights
Prices jump at round numbers like 1.00, 1.50, and 2.00 carats. A 0.90 or 1.40 carat diamond looks virtually the same size on the hand but can cost noticeably less.
Step 7: Check the certificate
Every diamond should come with an independent IGI or GIA grading report. Confirm the grades match the listing, and match the report number to the laser inscription on the stone. Every Marlow Design diamond comes with its lab report.
Why choose Marlow Design?

Thousands of stones, four Cs, a dozen shapes — it's a lot.
Send our diamond experts three things: your budget, a shape or style you love (a screenshot works), and how you'll wear it.
We'll come back with a short list of hand-picked stones that fit, explain the trade-offs in plain language, and help you choose the one that feels right for your story.
